UNI - UNIVERSAL AUXILIARY LANGUAGE

UNI is a simple international artificial language. It's much easier to learn and speak than any language you know. If you speak any Romance language you will understand roughly 70% of this dialogue — this is an approximate estimate and may vary by individual. Words used in the dialogue go beyond the current reference vocabulary; the vocabulary section is still being expanded and will be more complete in future versions.

Grammar Reference

1. Simplified alphabet:

There are only 21 letters in full version and 15 letters in simplified (whisper) version where voiced consonants are substituted with their voiceless equivalents.


UNI is a UNICASE language — meaning all letters have a single shared form regardless of size (no separate uppercase/lowercase shapes). Their visual form mirrors capital English alphabet letters. There are no small or lowercase letters for simplicity. Since there are yet no keyboards making capital letters small without changing their visual forms, we'll just use ALL CAPS for now.

So, as you noticed while reading the dialogue, C, H, Q, W and Y don’t exist in UNI. Not only are they not necessary, but they actually make learning to read more difficult and introduce a lot of confusion.

2. Simplified Pronunciation:

UNI has a phonetic spelling system, so every letter is pronounced the same way as it's written, no matter where it appears in a word.

E as in English met, pet, Spanish sempre, cerdo, Portuguese leite, gente

I as in English machine, marine, Spanish ir, sentir, Portuguese isso, bicho

3. Simplified grammar system with only 3 tenses, no genders, cases, moods or irregular verbs. You can predict the meaning from grammar and form new words following these morphology rules:


All Present Tense / Infinitive verbs always end in AR. The last syllable stressed in pronunciation.

Example: I pronounce - MI PRONUNSIAR


All Past Tense verbs always add O to the Present Tense / Infinitive. The last syllable is stressed in pronunciation.

Example: think - thought: PENSAR - PENSARO


In full, formal form, we add O to the infinitive form.

In simplified, informal form, the Present / Infinitive ending AR can be omitted and the verb reduced to PENSO with the last syllable stressed in pronunciation.


All Future Tense verbs always add E to the Present Tense / Infinitive. The last syllable stressed in pronunciation.

Example: I will think: MI PENSARE

In full, formal form, we add E to the Present / Infinitive form PENSAR. The last syllable is stressed in pronunciation.


All Conditionals always add BE to the Future Tense or EBE to Present Tense / Infinitive in full, formal form. The penultimate syllable stressed in pronunciation.

Example: I would think - MI PENSAREBE


In simplified, informal form, we can remove the Present / Infinitive ending AR and add EBE, so it becomes PENSEBE. The last but one syllable is stressed in pronunciation in that case.


All Continuous forms always end in ANDU.

Example: I am thinking - MI PENSARANDU

In full, formal form we add ANDU to the infinitive form PENSAR. The last but one syllable is stressed in pronunciation.

In simplified, informal form, we can remove the Present / Infinitive ending AR and add ANDU, so it becomes PENSANDU.


Most Nouns end in A.

Example: AMORA - love. Diminutive - AMORITA, AMORSITA.


Adjectives do not change gender.

All Active Adjectives are formed by changing the last vowel to U.

Example: Lovely - AMORU (noun describer)

AMORA becomes AMORU.


All Passive Adjectives are formed by adding suffix DU to nouns or active adjectives.

Example: Lovable - AMORADU, beloved - AMORUDU.


All Active Adverbs are formed by adding suffix RU to nouns or adjectives.

Example: Lovely - AMORARU

lovingly - AMORANDURU (verb describer).


All Passive Adverbs are formed by adding suffix DU to active adverbs.

Example: Loved - AMORARUDU, loved one - AMORURUDU


*Adverbs are not obligatory. Adjectives can be used instead. Quickly-quick.

Example: All active adverbs AMORARU / AMORURU - can just be active adjectives - AMORU and all passive adverbs AMORARUDU / AMORURUDU - can just be passive adjectives - AMORADU / AMORUDU in informal speech if it doesn’t introduce any crucial semantic ambiguity.


Active Gerund - AMORANDU - loving, lovingly, lover (active continuous verb).

Passive Gerund - AMORUNDU - being loved, the beloved one - (passive continuous verb).


*A lovely/loving mother - AMORARU / AMORANDU MAMA.

A loved mother - AMORADU / AMORUDU MAMA.

Active continuous verbs (gerunds) end in -ANDU. Articles are optional in UNI, so AMORANDU MAMA can mean "a loving mother" or "the loving mother" depending on context. Add an article (UNA / LA) if you need to distinguish "a loving mother" from "loving a mother".

Passive continuous verbs (gerunds) end in -UNDU. Being loved (by a) mother - AMORUNDU (POR) MAMA.


*Noun-to-verb conversions are possible. BONA - good thing. BONAR - to do well, to improve.

Uni has a flexible word order structure that can be changed to emphasise different parts of the sentence, or to create different shades of meaning. The default is SVO (Subject-Verb-Object) similar to English/Chinese.


English: The cat eats the fish.

Chinese: 猫吃鱼. (Māo chī yú.) - Cat eat fish.

UNI: KATA KOMAR PESKA - Cat eat fish.
